Hawkwood

Hawkwood, located off Highway 114 near I-35W, was a thriving Renaissance festival for several years, but sadly, fell victim to mismanagement and was abandoned in 2001. Most of the structures are gone now.

  Kneazle
www.bigcat.org
Actually, it's a serval named Junior, and he was just "on loan" to the International Exotic Feline Sanctuary in Boyd, Texas (just north of Fort Worth). But you may visit their site and admire the tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, jaguars, bobcats, and other big cats that are safely sheltered here.

ARROZ INSTITUTE FOR WIZARDING SCIENCES

"Still Life with Portkeys"
It is a credit to our state's dedication to eliminating litter along its highways (the "Don't Mess With Texas" campaign) that I had to create this scene with found objects.

Anne and Charles Duncan Hall.
Rice University
www.rice.edu
Located in downtown Houston, Rice University is one of the nation's leading schools for engineering and sciences. While the school does not field a quidditch team, it does have a darn fine baseball team, which won the NCAA championship in 2003. Thanks to fellow seeker Jennifer Boggess Ramon for the idea. (Arroz = "Rice" in Spanish.)

EL MERCADO DE LOS MAGOS / CALLEJÓN DIAGONAL
San Antonio
www.sanantoniocvb.com

This is the real Alamo. It's much smaller than in the movie. By law, no building in downtown San Antonio may cast a shadow on it.

The Riverwalk and
Market Square
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
An easy walk from the Alamo, the Riverwalk is just below street level and features hundreds of hotels, restaurants and shops. It's a three-mile walk all the way around.

Market Square (El Mercado) is a former farmers' market retooled as a tourist destination. Traditional Mexican culture is showcased, along with dozens of shops and restaurants, including the world-famous Mi Tierra restaurant and bakery.

Blast-ended Skrewt
It's a sunspider (Eremobates pallipes). Thanks to fellow seeker Amanda Lewanski, who once encountered one of these unexpectedly, for the idea.

North American Braintree
This jumbo seed pod comes from a Texas tree known variously as a hedge-apple,Osage orange, or bodark (bois d'arc) (Maclura pomifera).
